Job Overview

The Automation Engineer designs, integrates, programs, and supports automated equipment and control systems used in manufacturing operations. This position partners with manufacturing, maintenance, engineering, systems, facilities, vendors, and project teams to implement new equipment, troubleshoot existing systems, and improve equipment safety, quality, reliability, and efficiency. The role also evaluates emerging technologies and develops scalable solutions that support current and future production needs.

Highlights of your role

  • Research, specify, design, program, install, and test automated equipment and control systems.
  • Develop modifications and upgrades that improve safety, quality, reliability, efficiency, and production performance.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, controls, and programming issues.
  • Program and support PLCs, operator interfaces, robotics, control panels, software, graphic displays, databases, and external system interfaces.
  • Create, interpret, and maintain electrical prints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, suppliers, and engineers to ensure equipment and systems meet company standards and operational requirements.
  • Support the transfer and integration of new equipment, technologies, and products to the production floor.
  • Evaluate automation technologies and recommend solutions for project and future manufacturing needs.
  • Provide end-user training and technical guidance to maintenance, manufacturing, and other team members.
  • Communicate proactively, build strong cross-functional relationships, and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
  • Follow established electrical, environmental, health, and safety requirements and promote safe equipment design and work practices.

You're a good fit if you have (or if you can)

  • Working knowledge of PLC and operator interface programming, including Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 and FactoryTalk View or similar platforms.
  • Experience programming or integrating six-axis robots, including FANUC, Universal Robots, or similar systems.
  • Proficiency using electrical test equipment, diagnostic tools, and hand tools.
  • Ability to read, understand, create, and modify electrical prints and schematics.
  • Knowledge of Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently or collaboratively within a project team.
  • Ability to work effectively with vendors, suppliers, engineers, manufacturing teams, and maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to travel as needed, approximately 5%.

Also want to make sure you have

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
  • Two or more years of related experience designing, specifying, programming, integrating, or troubleshooting automated equipment and control systems.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education, technical training, and experience may be considered.
